The Mystic Realm: Community Edition (commonly shortened as MRCE) is a total conversion mod of SRB2 developed by Team Prismatic, a community-run development team to which anyone can join and contribute. This mod is a community-developed, ground up rework and remake of Mystic Realm, a well-known level pack by Mystic that became popular in the Final Demo era for its original soundtrack, varied level design, and secrets. In MRCE, levels have been entirely remapped to include new routes, secrets, textures, enemies, and gimmicks more in line with SRB2's own v2.2.

The level pack's story takes place after the events of SRB2. Dr. Eggman, upon being defeated in SRB2's Black Core Zone Act 3, crash lands on the remote Jade Island. Once said to be home to powerful beings who mysteriously disappeared long ago, the doctor eagerly sets his sights on the mystical Jade Prisms used by those very beings to open a portal to the Mystic Realm. Six months later, Sonic and his friends catch wind of Dr. Eggman's evil plot and fly off to the distant island.

Current release information

The mod can be downloaded from Team Prismatic's GitLab page, or alternatively in pre-compiled builds on its message board thread or Discord server.

Levels

The opening shot of the game's first level, Jade Coast Zone Act 1.

MRCE's singleplayer campaign consists of seven zones with three acts each, a hidden eighth, and two hidden final boss stages. Hidden within each zone's second act are Mystic Shrines, large temples with a Chaos Emerald shaped button in the middle which allow access to a hidden bonus stage themed around its respective zone known as an Emerald Stage. Completing an Emerald Stage will reward the player with a Chaos Emerald, which are required to enter the hidden eighth zone, Prismatic Angel Zone.

In the game's final emerald stage, Starlight Palace Zone, a Mystic Shrine not tied to any Chaos Emerald is accessible by collecting three elemental keystones hidden throughout the rest of the campaign, allowing access to a hidden level, Inner Sanctum Zone. The small stage contains the Master Emerald from Sonic 3 & Knuckles' Hidden Palace Zone, which grants the player the ability to transform into their Super Emerald forms instead of a traditional super form (or lack thereof).

Emblems & unlockables

The in-map emblems, unlike in the original Mystic Realm, bear symbols of common elements such as fire, water, and earth. The record attack emblems, however, show Japanese kanji characters.

  • 丸 --- "Round" (as in circular): Used for Ring emblems.
  • 時 --- "Time": Used for Time emblems.

Hidden throughout the game are 3 elemental stones: one for fire, electricity, and water. These stones can be obtained in the first acts of some levels, and are the key to accessing and unlocking Super Emerald transformations in Inner Sanctum Zone.

MRCE contains many unlockables, many from the original mod:

  • Record Attack: Unlocked by completing Jade Coast Zone Act 3.
  • Sound Test: Unlocked by completing Verdant Forest Zone Act 3.
  • Level select: Unlocked by completing the game.
  • Emblem Hints: Unlocked by collecting 30 emblems.
  • Emblem Radar: Unlocked by collecting 60 emblems.
  • Making of Mystic Realm: Unlocked by collecting 90 emblems. Developer commentary in text form.
  • Primordial Abyss Zone: A secret challenge zone unlocked by collecting 100 emblems.
  • Pandora's Box: Unlocked by collecting every emblem.
