Characters
This article lists the characters featured in SRB2 by default, both playable and non-playable.
Playable characters
There are six playable characters in SRB2, three of which can be unlocked through various methods. Each character has their own set of advantages and drawbacks in the various game modes.
All characters have shared the same basic movement stats since v2.2, making differences in them the exception, here is outlined the "normal" stats for any given character.

Sonic the Hedgehog
Sonic is the titular character of SRB2 and can outrun the rest of the cast on ground, but suffers from difficulty getting around hazards. His double-jump ability is the speed thok, named after the characteristic sound it makes and gives the player a forward burst of speed, which is useful for clearing wide gaps, redirecting momentum, and automatically giving acceleration. Because he cannot gain any height aside from jumping, some areas will be inaccessible to him, so he must find other routes around them. Due to his speed, Sonic is more difficult to control than the other characters, but when used correctly, he is able to find his way across stages rapidly.
Sonic can transform into his Super form, Super Sonic, when he has seven Chaos Emeralds. Super Sonic is faster, invincible, can jump higher, and can float in the air after jumping.

Miles "Tails" Prower
Tails is the most accessible character due to his flight ability, which allows him to clear long jumps, skip over obstacles, and reach areas that no other character can reach. He is very easy to control due to his relatively low speed and comfortable handling, making him ideal for the beginning player. He can still reach great speeds, however, if a player has mastered how to combine his spindash and flight.

Knuckles the Echidna
Knuckles can't jump as high as the other characters, but his gliding and climbing ability allows him to scale large gaps and get to areas others cannot. Because of his low jump height, Knuckles is sometimes forced to take harder, alternative routes hidden behind breakable walls where his skills are put to test. Knuckles can destroy breakable walls just by walking into them rather than having to spindash, and can destroy some breakable walls that are impossible for Sonic and Tails to destroy.
Knuckles can transform into his Super form, Super Knuckles, when he has seven Chaos Emeralds. Super Knuckles has increased speed and invincibility, but does not have an increased jump height. When gliding into walls or landing from a glide, he releases a shockwave that hurts nearby enemies.

Non-playable characters
Dr. Eggman
Dr. Eggman is the main antagonist of the Sonic the Hedgehog series and Sonic Robo Blast 2. Harnessing the power of a strange asteroid two months after his previous defeat, he begins his latest evil scheme by carving out Greenflower Mountain in his own maniacal image, forcing Sonic, Tails and Knuckles to take him on once more. He appears as a boss at the end of the first four zones, in which the player needs to defeat him and his invention before moving onto the next zone. He is the creator of most enemies the player faces in the main game, as well as secondary villain Metal Sonic.
He also shows up at the end of the game in Black Core Zone Act 3 as Brak Eggman.

Unlockable characters
In addition to Sonic, Tails and Knuckles, SRB2 features three unlockable characters that can be unlocked through various methods.
Amy Rose
Amy is the first of the three unlockable characters. She is unlocked by completing Frozen Hillside Zone, which is itself unlocked after earning five emblems. She does not have a Spindash, so she can't roll under small gaps and instead uses her hammer to attack enemies. Her hammer has other uses outside of attacking, including breaking through strong walls, floors, and spikes, which allows her to access areas that nobody else can. She can also hit a spring with her hammer to gain some extra height or be launched farther. Out of all the characters, Amy has the highest jump, allowing her to reach areas others can't reach with a normal jump.

Fang the Sniper
Fang is the second of the three unlockable characters. He is unlocked by defeating him in Arid Canyon Zone Act 3. Like Amy, he doesn't have a Spindash and can't roll under small gaps, but his skillset more than makes up for it. Fang can lock on to enemies and shoot them with his pop gun by pressing Spin, as long as he is standing still. His Tail Bounce ability allows him to easily reach higher areas, bounce on harmful surfaces without a scratch, and destroy breakable floors. Fang also has a very high jump, only falling short of Amy by a minuscule 8 Fracunits, although his Tail Bounce can launch him over double that high anyway.

Metal Sonic
Metal Sonic is the third and final unlockable character, and is unlocked by completing the game for the first time. He is first encountered in Black Core Zone Act 1, racing against the player, then fought in Black Core Zone Act 2. Metal Sonic's speed rivals that of Sonic's due to his special ability, Boost Mode: so long as Metal Sonic has enough momentum built up, his speed and jump height will increase and he will be able to break through spikes at full speed. However, he isn't fully invincible in this mode, and he can still take damage from certain hazards; additionally, Metal Sonic will exit boost mode if he loses too much momentum. While his speed makes him harder to handle, he has less difficulty with platforming thanks to his Hover ability, which allows him stay in the air as long as he has some momentum.
Metal Sonic has a Super form that can be used once he has all seven Chaos Emeralds, but he doesn't gain any extra abilities outside of increased speed and jump height.
