Accessibility
We know everyone has different needs, and that’s still true in Ringslinger Revolution. While there isn’t much to change, there are two things you can customize to suit your needs.
Viewmodel
The viewmodel is the Ring your character holds. To customize your viewmodel, open the console and use the command rsr_viewmodel <option>, where <option> is one of these:
- Right - The default option. Places the Ring to the right of your screen.
- Left - Places the Ring to the left of your screen.
- Center - Places the Ring in the bottom middle of your screen like it’s Quake.
- Off - Disables the viewmodel entirely.
In splitscreen games, Player 2 can customize their viewmodel using rsr_viewmodel2 <option>.
Powerup Effects
When using Super Sneakers or Invincibility, special effects will appear to the sides of your screen.
If you want to disable these, open the console and use the command rsr_screeneffects off.
They can be reenabled by opening the console and using the command rsr_screeneffects on.
Staying Alive
Remember at all times that the ultimate goal of Ringslinger Revolution is to keep your health above zero, or else you lose! To avoid that, you’ll have to keep your health topped up using pickups scattered around the map, but you may also think about maintaining your armor, which absorbs half of the damage that would have gone to your health otherwise.
Everyone starts with 100 health and 0 armor, but if the game feels you’re having a particularly bad day, you’ll spawn with an extra 25 armor. As a general rule of thumb, health pickups are more common than armor pickups. Certain powerups may also grant you a special ability that lasts until your armor breaks.
- Small health pickup: grants 10 health. Commonly found all around a map.
- Small armor pickup: grants 10 armor. Slightly less commonly found all around a map.
- Medium health pickup: grants 25 health. An uncommon find.
- Medium armor pickup: grants 25 armor. Found very occasionally.
- Big health pickup: grants 50 health. Usually found buried deep in secret locations.
- Big armor pickup: grants 50 armor. Usually found buried deep in secret locations.
Remember that it's not about your armor number: the moment your health drops to zero, you lose, lose!
Critical Healing & Damage Vulnerabilities
Are you close to death? You may be entitled to medical compensation. You’ll hear an unmistakable alarm and your HUD will flash if you’re in critical danger, at which point you’ll be able to critically heal from your next pickup, which increases the health gain by a slight but perhaps battle-securing amount.
But beware... for flag holders and hiders in Tag cannot critically heal! Not only that... but they take 50% more damage from all sources, as signified by that haunting evil sound! Watch your step!
Arsenal: Primary & Alternate Weapons
You’re no doubt looking for ways to reduce your foes’ hitpoints to zero, then? Well, you’ve come to the right place. Press your FIRE input to sling one of seven different weapon rings at enemies, each behaving dramatically different from one to the other, all dealing damage and knockback to your target.
Pick up one of the seven Chaos Emeralds to unlock the corresponding weapon ring’s alternate firemode, acting as a second weapon sharing the same ammunition and doing something directly correlated to the weapon’s usual function.
The alternate firemode for each weapon is activated using your FIRE NORMAL input. Make sure this is bound if you want to enjoy the mod to the fullest!
Ranged Weapons
- Red ring: the most common weapon found in Ringslinger Revolution, and also the worst. It’s not particularly good at anything but its abundance makes it a reliable backup option in a pinch.
- Pick up the green Chaos Emerald to use Charged Shot, a technique that causes your next Red ring attack to grow in power while
FIRE NORMALis held! The rate of charging is strongest at the beginning of the charge... as is ammo consumption.
- Pick up the green Chaos Emerald to use Charged Shot, a technique that causes your next Red ring attack to grow in power while
- Scatter ring: a short range weapon that fires five projectiles in a very wide spread that pack an impressive punch if they all connect.
- Pick up the purple Chaos Emerald to use Mass Scrambler, firing a singular projectile at high speeds that deals little damage, but rebounds off of the first impacted surface and explodes into a wide-spread devastating cluster blast. Press
FIRE NORMALagain while the bomb is in the air to detonate it early, blanketing large areas in explosions or punching right in your target's face!
- Pick up the purple Chaos Emerald to use Mass Scrambler, firing a singular projectile at high speeds that deals little damage, but rebounds off of the first impacted surface and explodes into a wide-spread devastating cluster blast. Press
- Automatic ring: a long range and incredibly ammo hungry weapon that fires an unbroken stream of projectiles non-stop so long as you can fuel it, accomplishing accuracy and damage by volume despite the low impact of each individual projectile.
- Pick up the blue Chaos Emerald to use Spray&Pray, dramatically accelerating the weapon’s rate of fire and ammo consumption while adding a slight inaccuracy to each projectile you release! If you don’t know where you’re aiming, your opponents can’t either...
- Explosion ring: a slow-firing explosive weapon that detonates when it impacts anything, providing an easy to use source of high damage over a wide area. Explode yourself to shoot up into the air!
- Pick up the cyan Chaos Emerald to use Self-Propel, granting you the ability to detonate yourself, launching forward at awesome speeds while also greatly reducing the damage taken from the maneuver.
- Grenade ring: a fast-firing explosive weapon that detonates on direct hits or bounces around until it explodes automatically, providing unmatched capability in both damage output and damaging multiple targets at once... if you can master its unwieldy trajectory heavily affected by gravity.
- Pick up the yellow Chaos Emerald to use Stickybomb, an inconspicuous looking weapon that sticks to surfaces and waits for an unwitting passerby to explode ferociously! However, the loud beeping and the smoke it emits while in hiding may tip off opponents to its existence. Hold down
FIRE NORMALto charge up its velocity, and shoot enemy Stickybombs to detonate them prematurely!
Hold down
- Bounce ring: a weapon behaving like the Red ring with the added perk of being able to rebound off surfaces up to ten times before expiring.
- Pick up the red Chaos Emerald to use Goldburster, firing a large slow projectile that explodes into a radial scatter of regular Bounce rings on impact! Press
FIRE NORMALagain while the projectile is in flight to detonate it early.
- Pick up the red Chaos Emerald to use Goldburster, firing a large slow projectile that explodes into a radial scatter of regular Bounce rings on impact! Press
- Homing ring: a slow-firing weapon that locks onto nearby enemies and relentlessly hunts them down! If you’re planning to avoid one of these, stay moving, because it’s slower than you... barely...
- Pick up the gray Chaos Emerald to use Router RPB, which allows you hold down
FIRE NORMALand lock on to an opponent over half a second or so... then launch a quickly moving explosive that detonates when it gets close to them! This projectile is quite clumsy to turn, however. If you've got somebody at death's door, finish them off with this!
- Pick up the gray Chaos Emerald to use Router RPB, which allows you hold down
Any pickup of any weapon immediately allows you to use it, but weapon panels act as double ammo pickups, so head for those if you badly need to restock!
Score points by landing kills on or assisting other players in killing your opponents.
Melee
So, you’re in a fight, and you’ve found yourself completely dry of all your weapons. What is there left to do?
Well, the answer is to remember that these hands never run out of ammo! Jump, spin, or otherwise use one of your character’s built-in weapons to attack opponents where all else fails!
These moves usually deal low damage, but can temporarily stun enemy players and even fling them away great distances... or into an environmental hazard. If two players attempt to melee each other at the same time, they’ll both be repelled! You'll also do more damage the faster you're going, so try to be the attacker if you're going to melee someone!
Some powerups may upgrade your melee attacks, sometimes even turning them from a backup plan to a legitimate main means of attack that can keep up with the weapons!
Powerups
Need an edge over your foes? Look for one of the powerups to turn the tide in your favor! Powerups come in two flavors: regular items, which provide a garden-variety boon, and power items, which can single-handedly rescue you from certain doom!
You’ve got a few types of powerups. Some are pickups that instantly grant you a boost of some sort, some do other things, but the most common ones you’ll be looking out for are the shield effects, which grant you some buff until your armor breaks.
Regular Items
- Super Ring: instantly refill your health to 100!
- Pity Shield: instantly refill your armor to 100!
- Super Sneakers: increase your movement speed and rate of fire for 20 seconds! Watch your ammo count...
- Flame Shield: applies the Flame Shield effect to your armor, granting you immunity to fire and causing your spins to leave a damaging fire trail on the ground. Jump and Spin to use the Flame Dash, a move which shoots you forward at blistering speeds, dealing a ton of damage if it connects and allowing you to keep up with the fastest! Watch out, because the fire has no fuel in deep water!
- Bubble Shield: applies the the Bubble shield effect to your armor, granting you immunity to liquid damage and drowning. Jump and Spin to use the Bubble Bounce, a repeatable move which sends you down into the ground at great speed and rebounds you higher, as well as squashing anyone you land on flat!
- Force Shield: applies the Force shield effect to your armor, causing you to reflect shots fired at you back at your attacker! Jump and Spin to use the Force Stop, a move which resets all your momentum, allowing you to dodge seemingly impossible things! Be careful, since explosives can't be reflected.
- Whirlwind Shield: applies the Whirlwind shield effect to your armor, causing you to suffer only halved knockback from all enemy attacks! Jump and Spin to use the Whirlwind Jump, jumping a second time in midair even while falling!
Certain powerups only exist in the singleplayer modes...
- Elemental Shield: applies the Elemental shield effect to your armor, granting you immunity to fire and liquid damage as well as drowning and causing your spins to leave a damaging fire trail on the ground. Jump and Spin to use the Elemental Stomp, a move which shoots you down into the floor and causes an explosion of fire where you land!
- Thunder Shield: applies the Thunder Shield effect to your armor, granting you immunity to electro damage. Jump and Spin to use the Thunder Zap, jumping a second time in midair! Make sure you don't dunk it in water if you want to keep it.
...and some only exist in player versus player.
- Teleporter: Nobody can hide. Swaps the position of every player on the map - potentially into lethal hazards or bad situations!
- Recycler: The great equalizer. Shuffles everyone's inventories around randomly!
Power Items
- Rail ring: instantly kill everything in your line of sight when you fire this beast! You only get one shot, so don’t miss, and beware the pesky Force Shield... Gains the ability to zoom in and see further away using
FIRE NORMALif you have the green Chaos Emerald. - Infinity ring: infinite ammo for 15 seconds! Who needs resource management? The best part is that each kill ads a bit more time to the powerup.
- Invincibility: become completely immune to damage for 20 seconds... AND you also deal tripled melee damage! Keep killing to gain even more time invincible! Unfortunately, you can't carry the flag in this state.
- Extra Life: go beyond the maximum! Health and armor to 200!
- Attraction Shield: applies the Attraction shield effect to your armor, granting you immunity to electro damage as well as improving your fire rate and reducing incoming damage by 25%. Jump and Spin while locked onto an opponent to use the Attraction Shot, launching you into your target at ludicrous speeds! But be careful, as any deep body of water will harmlessly fizzle out this effect...
- Armageddon Shield: applies the Armageddon shield effect to your armor, activating either when you Jump and Spin or when you run out of armor. This Armageddon Blast deals lethal damage to everything in a staggering radius, as well as replenishing your armor if you were the one to manually detonate the effect!
How To Use
Bar Rail and Infinity which are separate pickups, all powerups are provided via monitors.
In singleplayer, you’ll find monitors lying around the level that usually provide regular items, with the power items hidden away in secret areas.
In multiplayer, all of the map’s monitors are Weak Random Monitors, which cycle between the regular items at random as players pick them up and the monitors respawn. The power items are placed independently around the map, ideally with one Rail pickup, one Infinity pickup, and one Strong Random Monitor per map; the SRM cycles between the other four power items at random as they restock. You'll be able to tell it apart from the rest of the monitors since it's sparkling and lined with gold.
Do note that the power items respawn less frequently than normal!
Super Forms
If you somehow manage to gather all seven Chaos Emeralds, either by conquering the singleplayer mode’s Special Stages or by gathering them from your defeated foes in multiplayer, you’ll unlock the ability to unleash your Super form!
When you have all the Emeralds, a hype bar will appear on the bottom of your HUD. Deal damage to opponents to fill it, but avoid taking damage which will reduce it. Once you’re eligible to turn Super, it will begin flashing, at which point all you have to do is Jump and Spin to transform! Make sure you get rid of your shield effect first, if you have one.
While Super, your hype rapidly depletes; keep dealing damage to sustain it! All damage you would take goes to depleting your hype in your Super form; in addition, you benefit from increased movement and firing speed as well as dealing tripled melee damage. If you run out of hype, you revert back to normal and lose all your Emeralds, most likely surrounded by a very angry group who will be seeking to take this tremendous power away from you, so watch out...
Gametypes
What is a game and its rules, but a set of principles and a line drawn in the sand? There’ll be a need for such lines to figure out what’s going on when you fight against your friends in Ringslinger Revolution, so here they all are on display for you to familiarize yourself with!
Match
The standard shooter rules. Run around the arena and attack each other for nought but score and glory!
Tag
Everyone's got access to weapon rings. But who's to shoot? Why, there are a few "IT" players, and each runner eliminated joins the ever-growing "IT" team...
Hiders take 50% more damage from all sources and cannot critically heal.
Turn rsr_lasertag off if you want an experience closer to Vanilla; this will prevent hiders from shooting back.
Hide & Seek
Everyone but one player is given one minute to hide, after which "IT" is out to get them. Hiders cannot move or shoot! Think outside the box. Think big or IT’s gonna get ya...
Hiders are instantly killed from any damage.
rsr_lasertag does not affect Hide & Seek.
Team Match
The standard Match rules, but played with two teams pitted against each other. Collect points for your team to propel you all to a collective victory!
Capture the Flag
Two teams. You have a flag, they have a flag. Steal theirs and bring it back by any means necessary! But beware, for if you hold the flag, you take 50% more damage from all sources... and you can only capture their flag while yours is at home base! Your team will need to bring their coordination A-game to win this one!
Flag runners take 50% more damage from all sources, cannot critically heal, and cannot use active abilities.
Singleplayer/Co-op
Yes, you can make maps where you fight enemies instead of your fellow players for Ringslinger Revolution! Keep your health above zero and shoot your way to the end of the map, alone or with friends!
Console Commands
It's not just the main game that gets something extra out of this mod, but three new effects come directly to your developer console!
You'll want to make sure your CONSOLE input is bound to something for these! All you have to do is hit that button and get to typing to use the console commands.
